History of the Wahoo Saddle Club and PRCA Rodeo
The Wahoo Saddle Club of Wahoo, Nebraska was organized
in 1942. Charter members were Bill and Gertrude Placek, Ford Torrens, A.
J. Vance, and Dorothy Lindley.
In the mid forties the County Fair Board asked the
Saddle Club to put on horse shows and horse racing. After the 1954 fair
they decided to try improving the fair with a Rodeo Cowboy Association
(RCA) rodeo. 1955 was the first annual RCA rodeo of the Wahoo Saddle
Club. The 2006 rodeo will mark the 52nd annual Professional Rodeo
Cowboys Association (PRCA) rodeo. Join us July 27, 28 and 29 at 8:00
p.m.
Saddle Club members do not receive compensation of any
form, except the satisfaction of another successful year. The biggest
share of the money the club makes goes back into improvements for the
Fair Grounds. The club supports the 4-H program and also has donated a
rodeo scholarship to the UNL Rodeo Team for the past several years.
The first stock contractor was Walt Plugge of Nebraska.
The first announcer was Joe Cavenaugh, also from Nebraska. Other
stock contractors to follow were Hoss Inman (two years), Casey Tibbs
(two years), Korkow and Sutton and then later Korkow Rodeo Company
(sixteen years). Burdis Johnson (two years), and Bob Barnes (one year).
From 1980 to the present John Walter and Family of the Mid States Rodeo
Company of Kirksville, MO, have been the Wahoo Saddle Club's stock
contractor.
History of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association
In 1929, the Rodeo Association of America was organized.
In 1936 the name was changed to the Cowboy Turtle Association. After
contestants went on strike in Madison Square Garden in 1945, it was
again changed to Rodeo Cowboys Association (RCA). From 1974 on it has
been the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). It is now
headquartered in Colorado Springs, CO. There are many other rodeo
associations throughout the United States. The PRCA is the only
association that qualifies contestants for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR),
held in Las Vegas, Nevada during the first week of December, and a
chance of being named World Champion in each of their events.
There are six major events that you must have at a PRCA
rodeo, or it will not be approved. These events are bareback riding,
steer wrestling, saddle bronc, calf roping, bull riding and team roping.
The other sanctioned events are team roping and steer roping or
tripping. You must be in the top fifteen money winners throughout the
year to qualify for the NFR. Another popular event at PRCA rodeos is
Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) barrel racing. The top
fifteen in this event can also qualify for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR)
in Las Vegas.
